Shrek The Model of Web Design

Here is a web design theory: websites are like onions, you see, since websites layers. And ogres are like onions, since Ogres have layers. Websites are designed by web designers. Ergo – web designers are like ogres.

So, let's explore why web designers are like ogres.

First, let's see why we say that sites such as onions, with layers, in the first place – because this is the whole raison d'etre of my argument.

~ ~ Web sites have an outer layer
This is the graphical look and feel of the site. This is usually what most people when they refer to "Web Design thinking. "To create this joint you, or garden, Web Design ogre must have the eye of the artist and designer's skill with tools such as Photoshop or Fireworks. The graphic Web designers need to look at the latest web design styles have, he must be able to swing shades and shadows and merge them into Web 2.0 flavored onion soup. Preferably, not soup with eyeballs.

~ The second layer is the structure of a website ~
The structure has been through some procedures such as functional decomposition, if the Web designer with the main function (home page break) and the site into manageable sub sections start so that it could be determined at the end with a clear idea of the scope of the site and the internal structure. So here your web designer has some basic knowledge of software engineering have principles. But even more than that, Once the main features of the site are designed so that the features that are on the graphic design in such a way that the system is likely married. The knowledge The principles of good web design and usability (ala Nielson – http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20030825.html) and a familiarity with the place to http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/ learn to avoid making mistakes such as "Mystery Meat Navigation ', is indispensable.

~ The third layer of a website is dynamic and interactive elements ~
Frontpage and Photoshop, you can only get so far. Your web design might find Ogre that he has simply to go and kill some nerdy programmer to steal their manuals: PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web pages, AJAX and PHP respond – Building Web Applications. And he would know better, that is Ruby on Rails is a jewel not on a railroad track.

~ ~ Then we come to content
The site needs a good, quality content to be filled. Sometimes you have luck and have your client gives you good content. Other times should, you better start rewriting the techno-speak and corporate waffle and ask your customers easily if it benefits five their services to the state. Thus, a good knowledge of the text and a command of the English language will not come amiss.

So, we have the layers, to make a site. The core, however, is the marketing strategy.

~ ~ Marketing Strategy
We all know that it is not just a case of "build it and IT to come. "The website must be marketed and it can only be marketed if the underlying principles of SEO have in mind are kept from the beginning – in other words, Links are easily monitored by humans and search engines, all pages have meaningful titles, keywords, are gentle in the content of the pages worked. Apart from this, needs someone to of the marketing budget will be allocated on the website (all websites have a marketing budget, do not you use?) and the marketing budget to the best ROI for the site for – determines the best Internet marketing strategies for building links and traffic and then go out and execute (the strategy, that is).

Now my question: Is it fair is to expect a person to have all these skills?

Years ago, when I studied "computer science", there was basically one Aspire for professional and that was 'Systems Analyst'. If you worked for a really big companies, they could have distinguished between System Analyst and programmers. (And there was also a career as a "punch operator," which is strangely missing from today, we should all do our own punching …) and yes, I Take the "System Analyst" at that time was assumed to do everything – analyze, build, test, delivery and support of the system.

But … Fuggit minds …. "That was then, this is now."

Today there are many career paths for prospective math whiz-kid, sitting for an aptitude test. Everything from Business Analyst to Test Manager to Network Administrator to IT technicians ….

And BTW, if you have a COBOL programmer are, you're a COBOL programmer. You know, COBOL, this is what you do. No one would expect you to sort the DNS records for the company intranet server.

But the same specialization does not seem to have filtered through the web design arena. I saw a job description just today for a "Web Developer" which allegedly has the following capabilities: Photoshop, Fireworks, Flash, Swish. NET, C #, MSAccess, SQL design experience, ASP, VB,. NET, HTML, DHTML, ASP, XML, CSS, Java script and VB script. And this poor guy will also maintain networks and troubleshoot Windows servers. And they wait – this paragon of a Web design ogre is paid, what practically a minimum wage is in the IT world. And this is in the corporate world, where they should really know better and where they can actually afford to appoint specialists.

If you are a web design freelancer working for yourself, you should be sure that you are well versed in all the skills in the construction of the layers go one site … or if you prefer to build start working on a plan for strategic partnerships with other specialized freelancers. This way you can get a some freedom in what aspects of specialized web design that offers you the most, as well as the opportunity for other to enjoy the same thing to do.
