You can use Google Adword keyword tool for keyword research?

I do keyword research, and I have used overture keyword tools, but I am confused with Google. I would like to know if the Google Adword Tool "search volume trends" data for keyword research are used can. ie the data of this kind, that people in Google for a certain period of time to search for things? Or are these popular keywords that advertisers Keywords for use quotation? I am a bit confused??

use the AdWords Keyword Tool for keyword research. Note that all AdWords users have Access to this tool. Search volume trend is based on data that people enter into Google to search for a specific period of time. From the AdWords Help Center: This means that for each period of 12 months, we will show how much you would have received keyword, based on the broad match version of If you targeted all countries and all languages. The Chart shows the traffic growth in the last twelve months. Each bar in the graph refers to the keyword shown for the total period of twelve months.
