urgent question regarding the use of Google API's?

Hi, I have little or no experience in the use of API's and I Want the plugin to develop a programmer myself a WordPress The thing is. I stumbled on a Google page that people subscribe to and get the Google AdWords API (I would need for my plugin), but from what I could understand, I have to pay to use it. Could someone please tell me easy to understand in plain English, how does this all that I pay for? Google state they used cost $ 0.25 per API unit, but I am, or as what confuses is an API unit?
